Appropriate Behavior in the Library

Welcome to the new semester, and welcome to our new student workers! It's so good to have all of you here. With all the new student workers I wanted to addess some appropriate behaviors for the WORK environment, and this is a work environment.

1. Please feel free to greet patrons. It is nice to walk in to a place and be greeted, but it is uncomfortable to some people to feel pressured to speak to someone.

2. Please be mindful of people's personal space. Not everyone is comfortable with you in close proximity to them. I had to adjust my own perspective just a few semesters ago when someone was very uncomfortable when I was trying to whisper something to her. To her it was a threat, so please be observant and respectful of others.

3. Humor to some, is not always humor to others. As adults you should feel comfortable enough to speak to somone who is making inappropriate jokes around you. Some people take humor to be more of harassment than fun. Avoid any wording or behavior that may be suggestive or inappropriate.

You work with and assist people with a wide range of diversities, please make all interactions professional. We want to be viewed as a friendly department, but must always be professional and courteous.
