Daily tasks and friendly reminders

When people enter the library the circulation desk is the first desk they see. We are the first people they see and we are the ones that have the job of directing them to the correct department or desk. Because of this you must be alert at the desk.

1. It is not appropriate to lay your head down on the counter.
2. It is not appropriate to fall asleep at the counter.

Please consider this a friendly reminder. If either of these occur you could be written up or terminated.

I know we have many new workers so I wanted to go over the policy of when to go up and work in the stacks and when to stay at the desk.

Many times this semester we have only had one worker so that person has been trapped at the desk. We now have a more flexible schedule, so now when you've been alone and someone clocks in to work with you it is time for you to go up.

The general rule is = whoever clocks out first is the first one to work in the stacks. (This mainly applies to when 2 people come in at the same time) Ultimately, you need to communicate with who you are working with to see whose turn it is to go upstairs. No one should be at the desk for more than an hour at a time unless they are alone, and likewise, no one should have to work more than an hour at a time upstairs.

Things to remember when working in the stacks:

1. Although it has been slow this summer now is the time to develop the habit of taking the walkie talkie/keys up with you. Each time you are working in the stacks you must take the walkie talkie/keys up. This enables the person to contact you if they need a room unlocked -- which means you need to take the study room key with you as well.

2. When working in the stacks you are each responsible for all of the tasks. The tasks are: shelving, dusting (always needs to be done), shelf reading, inventory, and fronting and straightening. If you are unfamiliar with any of these jobs please talk to Ginger or I, and we will be glad to explain it.

3. When working on stacks duties: do the job you are supposed to do and work in the section that you are assigned. We do go up and check to make sure you're doing the job and that it looks nice.

Also, you should be checking the blog daily and reading any messages that show up on your W2W profile. These are the ways that we communicate with you so please check W2W daily and the blog each time you clock in.

I hope that all of this makes sense. I know we have several new workers, and I want to make sure that everyone is getting the information they need. If you have any questions Ginger and I are both happy to visit with you.
