For those of you who could not
attend the open forum last week, I wanted to give you all a brief summary of
topics we discussed.
1.
Per a student’s request, we will be instating monthly meetings with your
supervisors. We’re still working on
plotting out how we will go about this and we will let you know before they
start, but we hope to keep you more informed of your performance throughout the
semester so the end of semester evaluations will be less of a surprise.
2. Clay and Peggy will be retraining
on the laptop statistics this week to help clarify recent confusion on what data
needs to be written down.
3. We are going to update the
Circulation bulletin board with new pictures, so expect to get your picture
taken in the next few days.
4. Trading off between the desk and
the stacks:
All students are to trade off
watching the desk and working in the stacks.
It does not matter if you worked in the stacks the day/night before,
your duties continue each day.
Two students cannot work at the desk
at the same time. If a student is
watching the desk, the second student needs to be working on a project in the
stacks (not on tasks like making TexShare cards or cleaning laptops). In a similar vein, students working at the
desk need to keep themselves occupied and work on TexShare cards, shredding,
cleaning laptops and cleaning the circ desk etc.
If your shift is ending and you’re
working in the stacks, do not come back to the desk 10 minutes till the
hour. You can do smaller tasks like walk the stacks for books
or straighten shelves, but do not come down and talk to the student
working the desk until your shift ends.
Similarly, if you’re switching off between the desk and stacks with
another student, you need to complete a full hour. If you’re in the stacks and you finish
shelving a cart in 30 minutes, come to the desk and sign for another task. Do not expect the student at the desk to
leave their post early for you.
If a supervisor is watching the
desk, both students will be working in the stacks at the same time.
5. Headphones will not be returning
for student workers (for the new student workers, this policy was changed last
spring). The supervisor’s agree that it
is an issue of poor customer service to allow headphones to be used in patron
areas.
6. Studying is limited to Saturday
shifts only. The only other time
studying is allowed on shift is after midnight during extended hours for
finals.
7. To help keep students busy
in the evening, we have started a new project to work on at the desk. We have many call number errors in Sirsi
where the spacing is incorrect and you will be highlighting the errors. This project will be done in the evenings, on
weekends and during times when students need a task at the desk during the
day. We have gotten a new highlighter
for the project but if it dies please come ask a supervisor, we have already
gotten backups. Your supervisors have
the lists and the instructions, so please see them for more information.
As always, if you have questions
about something we mention please come ask a supervisor. We will be glad to try and explain it
differently or give you a visual.
Thank you!
