Clarification on night responsibilities

It's come to my attention that procedure hasn't been adhered to in the evenings as well as expected in recent years.  I'd like to take a moment to clarify procedures.

It has always been the case that during the last two hours of the late night shifts (Sun-Thurs) students could study if there were not major projects that needed attending.  Since we usually only see 100 patrons on Saturdays, we also allow studying during this shift.  Prior to 2011, the library closed at midnight.  So from 10pm-12am students could study.  At the request of SGA, the library extended our hours to 2am.  At that time, the Circulation students were then allowed to study between 12am and 2am.

I have always requested that the Evening Circulation Supervisor send students upstairs to work in the evenings since it's much slower and the supervisor can handle the desk on their own.  This includes the option of sending both student workers upstairs during periods where we have two student workers on the clock.

I also want to remind you that studying is never a promise.  This is a paid job and duties come first.  If there is a major project occurring, or maybe a task was overlooked earlier in the evening and it needs to be completed before close, you might be asked to work between 12am and 2am.

While I'm on the topic, I will also remind you that any studying that does occur needs to be done at the Circulation Desk, NOT behind the wall.  This includes Saturdays.  We need you to be easily accessible to patrons, so we want you at the front desk.  You may bring items to study with (laptops, notes, etc) so long as it does not impede the workspace.

Please feel free to stop by and talk with me if you have any questions!
