Patron names in Sirsi and Reservations

Patron names in Sirsi:
Occasionally we have students that have the same last name, first name, and middle initial. We recently had someone check out a book to a patron, and there was someone else with the same name. The book was incorrectly checked out to the wrong person. So now a couple of things have happened or will happen.

  1. The courtesy notice we send out three days before the due date did not go to the correct person.
  2. If the book is late or lost, the wrong person will be fined or charged a replacement fee.

And, as a supervisor, I'm going to believe that the library student workers have done their due diligence to ensure that the item was checked out correctly. But, I happen to be familiar with the student who contacted us about the books on her account informing us that she did not check out the items.

I write all this to impress upon you how important it is that you double check the name of the person checking out items.

  1. Scan their ID card.
  2. Don't have ID, look up using the name on their driver's license.
  3. If there are two students with same name and they are both student IDS (000111222) please have them verify their ID number or the address, but do NOT offer the information to them. (Example: Is your ID number 000111222?)
Reservations:
Please include the number of people in the reservations EVERY time. And, please do not do a range of number such as 4-6.

I hope all of this makes sense, but if not please come see me. We'll talk about it. :)
