Books Are Not being Properly Discharged

Hi all,

I wanted to let you all know that there have been a couple of circulation desk procedural issues that need to be corrected. I have noticed an increase in books that are getting turned in that have not been properly checked out. We have had several books that are being returned by patrons and the screen will say “item not charged.” This message means that the book was not checked out to the user. Please make sure that you have the correct screen up in Sirsi when checking out a book to a patron.  To get to the correct Sirsi screen go to the check-out tab under “Common Tasks,” and this screen will have  “User ID:” and “Item ID:”. You will then scan the patron’s student ID when checking the book out to the student.  If a patron does not have their student ID you can search them by using their driver’s license. If you do use their driver’s license, remember to double check and make sure it is in fact the right person with the right account. Recently we have had instances where a book was checked out to the wrong account, and it was probably because a driver’s license was used for checkout.  You will then scan the book and make sure the book’s information shows up on the screen. This screen will have the title of the book, the item ID, and the due date.  Please remember to always give the patron a receipt with the due date and this will help prevent a patron from saying that they did not know when the book was due.

Also, I recently have come across returned books that still have the stuffies inside. Please remember to take the stuffies out of books that have been returned and discharged.  You all should be checking for stuffies when books are first discharged and when you all are prepping a cart to be shelved.  If we are finding books that still have stuffies after double discharging, then that means it was overlooked twice.

If you have any questions please feel free to come and talk to a supervisor.

Thank You,

Clay
