Desk work and projects

I wanted to add a little more to Ginger's post from the other day about desk tasks. We have been redirected and asked to make sure that you are not just sitting up there reading your entire shift. There are projects that need to be worked on. Although you will not be busy every moment that you are at the desk you can find things to do that will keep you busy.

Projects that can be done at the desk:

1. Make a cart. Even if it in not a full cart, go ahead and make one.
2. Make dusters. It saves time for the person going up to dust.
3. Wipe down the counters with cleaning wipes.
4. Complete any TexShare cards and/or envelopes so they can be mailed. If there are some sitting back there that need approval nudge your supervisor. :)
5. Dust Reserve/ILL shelves.
6. Dust around computers on counter top and around CPU and receipt printer.
7. Take lost and found Texan cards to the Texan card office.
8. Clean the back counter.
9. Empty recycle boxes (not the shred).
10. Print off any desk forms that are low.
11. Water plants. (Kim will be happy to show you how.)
12. Wipe down the reservable tables. They get pretty dirty outside.
13. Check the marker bags to make sure markers work.
14. Clean whiteboards.
15. Ask if any of your supervisors needs a job/project completed.

Why do we need to do these things?

1.This is a real job. We get paid to work here.
2. If we are to maintain a full staff at the circulation desk, we need to stay busy. There are always things to be done even if they feel unnecessary or redundant. We don't want to lose hours, and that can happen if it appears that we don't have any work for you to do.

Conclusion:
If a supervisor asks you to do a project, please do it. Don't disagree or leave it for the next shift. I promise I will have them something to do too!

Thanks for all you do!
