What are we allowed to do at the desk on weekends when a
supervisor is not present and work is slow?
Saturdays ONLY -
You are allowed to work on homework on Saturdays as long as it does not impede
your ability to provide customer service. Do not cover the front desk
excessively and try to keep the center area between the two computer terminals
clear. You may not work on homework on the back counter in any
capacity. You need to be present at the front desk. Do not spend
excessive time at the back desk. It’s ok to quickly go pull a hold item
or reserve, but you need to quickly get back to the front desk. At shift
change do not neglect the front desk in order to talk to one another and
especially do not congregate in the back area. Until you sign out your
job is to work the desk. This applies at all shift changes, not just the
weekend shift. In the mornings when staff arrive, we should not find you
standing around chatting with no one manning the front desk.
You are allowed
to bring in paper/textbooks or a laptop to do your homework. If you need
a computer to do your homework you may check out a laptop to yourself.
The rule has always been that no cell phones are allowed at the front desk and
this will continue. Cell phones should not be at the front desk at any
time. If you desperately need to charge your phone, plug it in at the
back
We know things
get slow, but we expect you to find small projects to occupy yourselves.
Some things you can be working on during slow periods at the desk include:
·
Cleaning the computers and the counters
·
Cleaning all the laptops and their screens
·
Check to see what forms we are running out of
and make more
·
Checking that the marker kits are not running
out of ink (if they are, pull the bags and leave a note on Kym’s desk)
·
Shred anything in the shred box (this includes
the shred box in ILL underneath the paper cutter). We will no longer
shred anything in the green receipt bins and we will go over this new procedure
with each of you during training this week.
·
If there are EDUC books on the black cart by the
time clock, process and double discharge the items and place them on the cart
behind circ.
·
Play the cash games on the circ website to
practice your change making skills.
·
Play the LC games posted on the circ website to
improve shelving skills
·
Load a cart from the back sorting area and bring
it to the desk to prep for reshelving
·
Review the circulation webpage, student worker
wiki, or library website, specifically the circulation department http://www.tarleton.edu/library/circulation.html
·
Work on department projects, if they were not
finished during the week (cutting out bookmarks, folding brochures, etc.)
